Preventing & Treating Bites
The danger of Snakes and Scorpions is another case of human exaggeration and paranoia. Deaths due to Snake or Scorpion bites are very rare. This irrational fear of Snakes has led to many innocent and often non-poisonous Snakes being killed on sight. In general, Snakes and Scorpions only attack if you disturb and startle them. Snake and scorpion bites are seldom fatal but can be extremely painful. There are roughly two types of poison:

  • Neurotoxins: paralyze your muscles. These are very dangerous as they can paralyze your heart and respiratory muscles.
  • Digesting Toxins: are used by Snakes to soften up the prey and make it easier to digest. These venoms can cause serious tissue damage.

Venom is a form of toxin secreted by venomous animal (e.g. Snake, Scorpion, Spiders etc.) for the purpose of causing harm to another. Venom is injected into victims by means of a bite or sting, which differentiates it from poison.

Signs of Scorpion poisoning:

  • Widespread numbness
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • A thick tongue
  • Blurred vision
  • Roving eye movements
  • Seizures
  • Difficulty in breathing

These are the basic things you need to know about Snake and Scorpion Bites. If these symptoms are seen in the victim then it means that the poison has spread in the body of the victim. These are some of the common symptoms found in the victims of snake or scorpion bite but all these symptoms may not be found in all the victims.

The venom of the snake & scorpion affects the nervous system, heart and blood vessels. The sting itself is very painful, and when a lot of venom is injected, its effect on the body will be quickly noticeable. The reaction to the venom is restlessness, muscle cramps, lots of sweating and tearing of the eyes, faster pulse rate, and increasing damage to the heart which can lead to possible heart failure.

Treating a scorpion sting is similar to treating a snake bite—calming the victim, immobilizing the affected limb, and quick transport to a hospital. It is also advisable to put some ice on the sting, which will alleviate the pain, and slow the progress of the venom.

As in the case of snakes & scorpion, the best thing to do is prevent the sting in the first place.

  • Be very careful when approaching places where venomous animals like to hide, such as underbrush, inside corners of buildings, and piles of wood or stones.
  • Avoid putting your hands in these places, and if you need to move a pile of wood or stones, use a rod or pole to shift the materials before picking them up.
  • When camping, take great care when you wake up, check the tent and the sleeping bag, and shake clothes and shoes (outside the tent) before putting them on.

In ayurveda, “Dhatus” are basically the body tissues which are responsible for the functioning of the systems and organs and the structure of the body. Each of the Dhatus is built out of a previous one and they develop on the nourishment that comes from the digestive system. They are basically the result of the action of catalysts that convert one tissue to another. According to Ayurveda, there are seven basic types of dhatus in a human body which are composed of five Mahabhutas. These are known "Sapt–Dhatus". The seven dhatus are the seven tissues of the body: In English they are Plasma, Blood, Muscle, Fat, Bone, Marrow / Nerve and Reproductive tissue. In Sanskrit, they are Rasa, Rakta, Mamsa, Meda, Asthi, Majja and Shukra. These are the structures that make up the body.

These “Dhatus” remain inside the human body in a proper equilibrium so that the body can function properly. When we got sting by a snake & scorpion, venom of such insects or animals cause imbalance in Sapt Dhatus and this is the reason when venom is in the body, it affects all Sapt Dhatus in a sequence. As soon as, all Sapt Dhatus got imbalanced, symptoms of snake or scorpion victim shows different level of severity.
